Hi! My name is
Ann Ramage, the District Archeologist for the Medford BLM.
Thank you for your interest in the legality of metal detecting on public
lands. I checked with our law enforcement personnel and there are no laws
against using a metal detector on public lands. However, there are laws
against collecting archeological and historic artifacts such as bottles,
cans, horseshoes, etc. from public lands. The laws regulating the
collection of artifacts from public lands include the Antiquities Act of
1906 and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A web site
